Demistifying Solar Batteries

Let’s talk about batteries

“There has been a lot of buzz on battery technology lately. Should I get a battery?”

The answer is…MAYBE.

It really depends on what you want and if a battery can add value to you at this time.

There are two primary ways that homeowners benefit from owning a battery.

Number one is BACK UP. This is for if the grid goes down. If disaster strikes.

If there’s a hurricane or fire in your area.

But on a much more common basis, having a battery will back up your home. So that’s one of the reasons why people choose to pair their solar with a battery.

Number two. Often times, you can actually save money if you live in an area with utility that has what’s called TIME OF USE RATES, in certain utilities, you pay more for energy during specific times.

For example, in San Diego, people pay more for energy from 4 to 9 PM. That’s what called a PEAK TIME OF USE and having a battery can help offset those peak power rates.

So instead of pulling energy from the grid during those times, your battery can discharge that energy into your home. So you can avoid paying the most expensive rate from your utility.

“But are batteries required?”

At this point, they’re not because of the wonderful policy we have with net metering. Essentially the grid acts as your giant battery. SO every kilowatt-hour you generate from your solar system gets stored in the grid and you pull it back off and net metering makes sure you get credited for that.

Ask a consultant today if you’re interested in owning a battery to pair with your solar system.
