Battey Back Up Versus Generators
When the power goes out, how ready is your household?
In the US, solar-powered households are increasing. A report from the Solar Energy Industries Association has stated that a new solar system is installed in the U.S. every 75 seconds. Currently, there are 18.6 million homes using solar power.
That is 3% of the country’s total energy use – 36% higher than it was 10 years ago. And it is continuously increasing!
And to fully maximize not just your solar panels’ capacity but also savings, more and more people are including a battery backup system or generators. The aging electric grid infrastructure all over the country has urged homeowners to explore power backup systems.
So what do you think works better with a solar panel system? Let’s find out.
The Difference
Batteries run on electricity. This means it can be charged from the excess energy of your solar panels OR energy from the grid. It has the capacity to use off-grid backup energy, meaning you can recharge it even if the power grid goes down.
On the other hand, generators, at least in the newer models, have the capability to use solar energy to recharge. However, usually, these generators use diesel or natural gas to convert them into energy. Your generator will continue to run as long as you have sufficient fuel.
So what’s the right backup system for you?
Both have their own set of advantages and disadvantages so you should carefully decide what would be best for you and your home.
If there’s anything we’ve learned from the global pandemic and recent surge of natural disasters from hurricanes, flooding, to forest fires, it’s that we really have no idea when and where it could strike and how it can immediately change our lives.
That being said, backup power options are useful since power grids are susceptible to both man-made and natural disasters. This means they can immediately shut down during a crisis, directly affecting your households. Depending on the degree of the crisis, power outages can last days or even weeks.
Being able to store backup energy from the power grid or your solar system excess energy will allow you to keep the electricity running in your home. This can help you keep food from spoiling, keep medical equipment running, and use your computer for work or emergency.
Generators are a great choice if you’re near a natural gas line, but isn’t much even with a solar system. Though ideal if you require larger amounts of energy for longer periods of time, they require replacement twice as often as lithium-ion solar battery packs and produce much more noise.
With Solar Batteries, they’re great for instant power for hours. You can offset your energy use during peak demand hours (if the utility company has a time-of-use element) to allow you to store more power. Though it has a higher initial purchase cost, the long-term savings are worth it because they run entirely on solar energy and have a very minimal maintenance requirement.
