Maintaining Your Solar System
If you own a solar panel system, you would know that these can last for years with limited maintenance. However, it doesn’t mean that once installed, you’ll just leave those there. Regular checkups will not only make sure your panels are efficiently working but also helps you prevent costly repairs. Taking care of your panels will make them look brand new, nice, and shiny.
Knowing the system doesn’t take a lot, it’s actually very easy to understand and familiarize with. Being on top of your solar system will help if in case there is maintenance needed.
We’ve rounded up the most important things you need to remember in maintaining your solar system:
Number One: Regularly Check For Dirt and Debris Build-Up
Solar panels actually don’t need to be cleaned too often, especially if you’re from the Midwest. Occasional rain will take care of the dust, and snow will actually melt faster on your panels than it will on your roof’s surface.
It’s a good idea to regularly check for residuals like dirt, snow, or fallen leaves. If you find any, a light rinsing using a water hose should take care of it.
Number Two: Be on the Lookout For Rack and Roof Penetrations
The racking is the one responsible for ensuring that your solar panels are securely mounted on your roof. It has bolts that penetrate and holds the weight of your panels for structural efficiency. These systems in place have undergone many tests to make sure that they are durable regardless of roof structure or weather conditions.
If you notice leaks (although that rarely happens), contact your solar provider or installer to schedule a visit to fix them. More often than not, these issues are covered by the warranty.
PRO TIP: Do not attempt to fix them yourself to avoid any further damage that might void your warranty!
Number Three: Make Sure to Check Panels After Extreme Weather Events
Did your area just have a bad storm? A tornado? When it’s already safe to go outside, go check your panels as these natural events can result in broken panels.
Broken glass on your panel will definitely have an impact on the performance of your solar system. These can be easily diagnosed by looking at the appearance physically, or by checking their performance online or through your app.
Homeowners insurance cover panels in the event of severe weather. Keep in touch with your solar provider to help you in every step of repairing or replacing your panels.
Number Four: Regularly Monitor Your System
Most solar systems come with an online monitoring function that can help you track the daily, weekly, or even monthly performance of your system.
Monitoring your system at least once every few weeks is a good practice. Some homeowners even monitor on a daily basis to check their output.
Solar panel systems are one of the most low-maintenance home investments. They last well beyond their 30-year warranties. So make sure you take care of them so they can take care of you!
